Gammelstad Church Town is a unique World Heritage Site where history and tradition come together. Here you’ll find a late medieval stone church surrounded by hundreds of red church cottages, and nearby is the Hägnan Open-Air Museum with old Norrbotten buildings and activities throughout the year.
This is where Luleå was founded in the 1600s before the town was relocated due to land elevation. The church town tradition is still alive today – people visit their cottages during church weekends, events, or simply to relax.
Since 1996, Gammelstad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an invaluable place for humanity, preserved for future generations. Stroll through the narrow alleys, visit the grand old church, and take part in our events. See you in Gammelstad!
